This is a French, 46% ABV, single malt that was number 100 in my search for all 101 World Whiskies to Try Before You Die. A French whisky you might ask, perhaps with a little cheeky smirk on your face? When you stop to consider the French distillation history with cognac, calvados and Armagnac, their expertise in wood management for their moderately successful wine industry, their passion for single malts (France being one of world’s biggest whisky consumers) and the fact they share a Celtic heritage with the Scots and Irish, the real question should be why isn’t there a lot more French whisky? The nose on this expression is quite fruity, lemon peel and marmalade, with an earthy malty note. The taste is quite sharp, more of the bitter fruit from the nose and some spice along with campfire smoke and with time some caramel then a dry clean finish. Well balanced and tasty. C’est magnifique? Non. C’est bon? Oui. Now to find number 101 before Ian Buxton publishes another book. What’s that you say? 101 Legendary Whiskies? Merde.
