An interesting whisky from the recently reopened Glenglassaugh distillery. The nose has lemon, and other fruity notes, along with malt, coconut and considering the 57.2% ABV surprisingly little alcohol burn. The taste is sweet and highly spirited, with grainy notes, citrus peels and is slightly floral, even perfumed. Not a massively complex palate and the finish is dominated by the drying of the alcohol. Evolution is an interesting choice of name, and an appropriate one. If the new make spirit is the hunched up chimp in the iconic evolution of man image, and the refined Glenglassaugh 26 year old is the upright Homo sapiens, then this is the Neanderthal; robust, strong and definitely progress, but still with some way to go. A proto-whisky.
