Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

    Jim Beam Devil's Cut

Jim Beam has found a way to recover the spirit that soaks into the staves of a cask and extract that, then mix it with aged bourbon to produce this product.  I have to say it sounds, quite frankly, like a terrible idea.  But what do I know?  So here it is... the Devil's Cut.  If you are expecting an oak-fest (and you probably should) you won't be disapointed.  The nose is spice, fresh cut sawdust and vanilla. It actually pretty good, with the vanilla reminiscent of the Jim Beam Black that I like.  The taste is sweet at first, then some ginger spice and a little heat builds (it is bottled at 90 proof) and then starts to dry out.  The finish is oak and little a bitter but I have to say overall I found this more balanced than I expected.   I prefer it to standard White Label and it's probably a good one to pour over ice on a hot day.
