Akashi Ume

This Japanese plum flavored whiskey is bottled at 30% ABV.  There is sweet, and then there is "have the number of a good dentist handy" sweet.  This one falls into the second category.  The nose is sweet but also delicately floral.  There are some plum notes are in the taste, more sugarplums than The Nutcracker aand some prunes and jelly babies.  Imagine a whiskey flavored Jelly Bean.  The finish is a thick coating of sugar on the teeth combined with some mint from the toothpaste you will have to keep nearby.

Glenfiddich Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask

I bought a set of all three of Glenfiddich's Age of Discovery 19 year old bottlings in a Duty Free store in Panama.  The other expressions are a Bourbon Cask and a Madeira Cask.  I have a soft spot for Glenfiddich who are not known for finishes or even line extension.... they tend to produce same high quality line up year after year.  This one has a nose with red fruits, wine gums and malt.  The taste is smooth with more malt, bite of pepper, orange peel, toffee and chocolate biscuits.  The finish has caramel and the red wine tannins are also evident.  With water the fruit becomes more tannic and some spice and peppermint in the finish.  Very nice.  Still a Glenfiddch first and foremost, but a nice subtle use of wood.
