The nose on 43.4% expression is very floral with some wheaty breakfast biscuits and spicy notes.  The taste is very smooth with baked spiced apples (maybe even slightly burnt) caramel and honey.  The finish has some slow building heat along with some Bovril (salty / meaty) notes.  Reminded me of good Texas barbeque brisket with strong spice bark.  Overall a ittle too much burnt, salty and bitter notes with not enough sweetness to balance it for me.

You Could Not Make this Stuff Up... The Final word in "Craft"

    Written by

OK whisky people, regardless of what a Florida judge may say, can we all agree it is now time to take the word "craft" out back and shoot it in the head like a diseased dog as it has become totally meaningless as Pepsi announce launch of their "craft soda". Time to call a good class action attorney? Mmmm a "good class action attorney".... add that to the list of sentences I thought I would never write.

    Rebel Yell

A very interesting wheated bourbon that is included in 101 World Whiskies to Try Before You Die.   The nose has vanilla and coffee (vanilla latte?) and some sawdust.  The taste is very nice, sweet and quite rich and full for "value" bourbon at 40% ABV.  There are some wheaty flavors (bread, biscuits) as well as familiar toasted oak, caramel and spice.  It takes a little to open up but it's worth the wait.  Nicely integrated, it is quite hard to pull out individual flavors.  The spice lingers through the finish along with sweet and tart notes that keep everything nicely in balance.  If you like Makers Mark you might want to try this (and save a few bucks at same time).   I have paid a lot more for a lot worse, so as Billy Idol said in the song of the same name.... "With a rebel yell, she cried more, more, more."
