Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

Blog Reader:  Are you going to post any new interesting blog entries, or for that matter, any kind of blog entries, ever again?

Blog Writer: Yes.  When I have something to say that isn't tired and hacky.   I will in the meantime continue to post tasting notes and visit distilleries.

    Blog Reader:  Thank you.

    Blog Writer: No, thank you.

    Old Grandad

True story. The first time I drank Old Grandad, sometime aorund 1992, the night ended up with me piercing my roommates ear with a needle. This time... nothing quite that exciting, just some mediocre tasting notes.   For the record this was the 43% ABV version, I understand they now only bottle Old Grandad at 40% ABV and yet for some reason no Maker’s Mark style hysteria? The nose has bubblegum, corn syrup and comes across very sweet and young. Not the nose you might expect for an old Grandad. The taste is a little rough at first, spice, bitter coffee, cola and chocolate. It does softens a little with time. The finish has bitter oak and high rye content is evident with spices and some mintiness detectable. Feels a little unbalanced, overall taste lacks the sweetness of the nose.
